This course is presented to familiarize Veterinarians and their associates with the principles of protection from radiation in diagnostic imaging. Atomic Structure is outlined briefly and an introduction to cell biology is presented. This continues through the cell components and their sensitivity to radiation damage to the conclusion of whether the cell can be repaired or die.
The fundamentals of electricity follow to outline how radiation is produced in the electronic circuit. The fundamentals of the xray tube and the heterogeneous nature of radiation produced within the xray tube is discussed. The effects of overexposure to radiation are outlined and methods of protection are presented for both the patient and the operator.
Finally, the various laws and regulations are outlined for International, USA and Canada. It is the objective of this course that every person who works in a facility that uses x-radiation to image patients must be trained in the basics of radiobiology and radiation protection.
